You know how Doogie Howser always writes in his diary at the end of the day? Don't you wish you were that disciplined? Well, MYgeoDIARY is an application which reminds you to make diary entries each time you boot GEOS. It even has a lock like a real diary. The resulting file is a geoWrite file which you can edit later on.
Before You Start:
This program was written and tested on a C64. I have done everything I can to see that it will work on a 128 in both 40 and 80 columns, but it has not been tested on a 128. If you try this on a 128 and have problems, please leave me E-Mail (not comments) with specific probelms, where and when they occurred. And if it DOES work, let me know that, too.

How It Works:
1) MYgeoDIARY is an auto-exec file. You may place it on your boot disk anywhere AFTER "configure" and after any auto-date file you have. There are several auto-exec files on Q-Link that let you set the date and time during boot-up. You MUST have some kind of date setter for this to work and it MUST be on the disk before MYgeoDIARY.
2) MYgeoDIARY will access up to three drives if you have an reu. I don't like saving stuff onto my boot disks, so I have a special diary disk for my MYgeoDIARY files.
3) The first time you run MYgeoDIARY, you will be asked to enter a five digit combination. Make sure it is NO LESS than five. Once you enter the combination, a file called "lockandkey" will be created. You should save this file to the disk that your diary files are on. Once you have done this, every time MYgeoDIARY runs you will be asked for the combination. You'll have three chances. If you blow it the third time, you'll go back to basic. This is to keep someone else from reading you diary.
However....
At this point, MYgeoDIARY has no facility for reading previous diary entries. That must be done with geoWrite. The "lockandkey" function was added because future MYgeoDIARY versions will have file review features.
However.....
The security function will also keep people from getting into GEOS, since you can't pass MYgeoDIARY and enter desktop without the combination.
If you have created a "lockandkey" file but it is not on any of the current disks, MYgeoDIARY will ask you if you wish to try different disks to find it. If you answer "no", a new "lockandkey" file will be created.
4) When you run MYgeoDIARY, it looks for a diary file for the current month. If it can't find one, you will ne asked if you wish to change disks and try again. If you answer "no", MYgeoDIARY will create a new file. If it has to create a new file, you will be given a dialogue box to choose disk and drive to save the file on.
(NOTE: At the time you are asked to create a file you are also given the option of quitting to the desktop. This also happens to be the "back door" to bypass the lock protection; just make sure when you are booting that NONE of the disks in the drives has a "lockandkey" file on it.)
(ALSO NOTE: Once you are at the "create" dialogue box there is no turning back if you suddenly remember that you did have a disk with the needed file on it. At this point, you should quit to desktop and then run "MYgeoDIARY" as an an ordinary application.)
5) Once it has either found or created a file you will be allowed to enter data for the CURRENT date. If this is the first entry for that date, you will start at line #1. If you have already entered information for that date, you will start out at the next available line.
6) Lines can be 52 characters long. You won't be allowed to enter any more than that. Line entry is done via a dialogue box. Once you have entered a line and hit return, the line will display on the screen below the dialogue box. The next line will be displayed below that, the next below that, etc. When the lines reach the bottom of the screen, the next line will appear in the top position. Once a line has been entered and you have hit return it can not be edited until you edit it with geoWrite. When you have entered the last line you wish to enter, click the "quit" icon in stead of hitting return.
7) Once you are done entering lines, either because you hit "quit" or you ran out of lines, you will see an author dialogue box, followed by a warning box to remind you that if MYgeoDIARY was run during boot-up, you need to put your boot disk back in the boot drive. Do this before continuing.

1) The MYgeoDIARY files are geoWrite 2.0 files. If you have an earlier version of geoWrite, download and use "wrongiswrite" to convert the files to whatever version you need. I would suggest you do this on a copy, not the original file. I did convert a file to geoWrite 1.1 and then reloaded it. It loaded and saved fine, but I didn't test this extensively.
NOTE: Once a month is over, you can do anything you want to your MYgeoDIARY files. Editing and modifying constraints are only meaningful for the current month's file.

A new file is created for each month. The file names will be "DIARYmmmyy" where "mmm" is the three letter month abbreviation and "yy" is the year. Example: DIARYAug90. (MYgeoDIARY only works thru 1999. If you are using it in the year 2000, sue me!)
3) Each un-used page of MYgeoDIARY starts with "zzz".
4) You can edit the MYgeoDIARY files with certain limitatons:
a) Don't insert or delete pages lower than page 32. MYgeoDIARY doesn't care about pages added above page 31.
b) MYgeoDIARY counts its lines by Carriage Returns. If, for some bizarre reason, you decide to add lines with geoWrite for the current day or a future day, keep this in mind.
c) Although you can only enter 52 characters per line through MYgeoDIARY, there is no reason why you can't make a line longer with geoWrite, even for the current or future day.
d) I wouldn't mess with changing the ruler, fonts or styles except for days already past. I don't know what would happen. Maybe nothing, but don't bother.
5) There some specific error warnings such as not enough room on a disk, but most disk errors are handled in one of two ways.

The second error type is a "fatal" error. This is less likely to occur, but if it does you will be sent to desktop.
2) WARNING: There is no error checking for overwriting and existing file. The only way this would occur is, if after telling the application to create a new file you insert a disk that already has that file on it. Why you would do that is beyond me.
3) Like all auto-exec files, this can be run from desktop like a normal application.
4) MYgeoDIARY isn't meant to be a fancy text editor. Its purpose is to remind you to write in your diary and provides you with a means to do that. Keep that in mind when you send me your comments via E-Mail. (I do not read comments section of libraries.)
